IELTS: What You Need to Know About IELTS Before the Test
What is IELTS?
Is the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) The primary purpose is to assess whether the candidate's English proficiency meets the required level.
What you need to know is that the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council, and IDP Education Pty Limited own IELTS. IELTS has only one website, www.ielts.org
What IELTS format do you need to know?
In IELTS, there are two types of candidates: general and academic candidates. In IELTS, all candidates do the same IELTS listening and speaking. Therefore, in total, the test format includes SIX components, namely listening, academic reading, general training reading, academic writing, general training writing, and speaking.
The total time for the IELTS test is 2 hours and 44 minutes.
Listening
Listening IELTS has 4 sections, and each section has 10 questions. The first two sections are about social needs. In the first section, you will be presented with a conversation between two speakers, and in the second section, it will be a monologue.
The third section involves a conversation among up to four people. The fourth section is also a monologue.
There will be different types of questions in different formats, such as multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, summary completion, sentence completion, & short-answer questions.
In listening, candidates have to listen to the recording once only and answer the questions as they listen. IELTS candidates are given 10 minutes to transfer answers to the answer sheet.
Academic Reading
IELTS academic reading has three section and in total, there are 40 questions. You should expect three texts from journals, books, magazines, and newspapers.
The texts are on topics of general interest. Also, in this test, various types of questions are used such as multiple choice, identifying information (True/False/Not Given), identifying writer’s views/claims (Yes/No/Not Given), matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, diagram label completion, and short-answer questions.
General Training Reading
IELTS general training reading has three sections and a total of 40 questions. Texts come from notices, advertisements, leaflets, newspapers, instruction manuals, books, and magazines. The first section tests the basic linguistic survival in English.
The second section focuses on the work context, while the third section involves more extended texts. Also, in this test component, various types of questions are used, similar to Academic reading.
Academic writing
IELTS academic writing has two tasks. Task 1 lasts for 20 minutes, and candidates are expected to write 150 words.
Task 2 lasts for 40 minutes, and candidates are expected to write 250 words.
In task 1, candidates are expected to respond to a given situation, while task 2 involves the point of view, argument, or problem.
This component assesses the ability of the candidate to write in an appropriate style.
Speaking
This component of the IELTS tests candidates' ability to speak English at a required level.
It takes 11 to 14 minutes, and it has three parts: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.
Part 1: The candidate and examiner introduce themselves and answer general questions. It takes between 4 and 5 minutes.
Part 2: candidates are given a task card with a prompt and asked to talk on a particular topic. Candidates are given 1 minute to prepare and 1-2 minutes to make notes if they wish.
The examiner asks 1-2 questions on the same topic.
Part 3: There will be a discussion between the examiner and the candidate. It will last 4-5 minutes.
